Abstract

1303979 Temperature sensitive switches GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 17 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 43552/71 Heading H1N A fire detector comprises a chamber 17 connected to atmosphere by a filter 19 of sintered metal particles and a switch 12, 13 responsive to the pressure in the chamber 17 whereby the ambient temperature increases at more than a predetermined rate set by the porosity of the filter 19, the switch is closed to operate an alarm. The switch 12, 13 is operated by a diaphragm 15 supported by a rigid back-plate 16 and sensitive to the pressure. In addition a spring-urged pin 20 with a large head 26 is disposed opposite the diaphragm; a fusible mass 23 normally holds the pin away from the diaphragm as well as supporting an indicator flap 22. If the temperature exceeds a predetermined value the mass 23 melts allowing the pin 20 to close the contacts 12, 13 to operate the alarm and flap 22 falls to indicate which detector operated the alarm. The filter may be of nickel, stainless steel, "Monel" metal or "Inconel" (Registered Trade Marks) and is such that its porosity decreases with increasing temperature.
