Abstract

1303471 Coating and lining foundry moulds AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc 10 March 1970 11507/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] A graphite mould is maintained at 120- 205‹ C. while a coating, 0À013-0À115 cm. thick, including refractory oxide (such as Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , ZrO 2 or combinations of these) is applied, e.g. by spraying, to the entire internal casting surfaces and is then maintained at above 100‹ C. until molten steel to be cast is poured into the cavity. In the case of pouring into several such moulds the rate of pouring, e.g. by bottom pouring, is varied between 1À28 and 12À82 cm. rise per sec. according to the steel and according, inversely, to wall to wall dimensions of the cavities. The size of refractory particles may be between 2 and 30 microns. Colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate, colloidal alumina and ball clay binders with dispersing and suspending agents are used in aqueous suspensions to be sprayed on in layers.
