Abstract

1303179 Marine antifouling compositions NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 June 1970 [1 July 1969] 15361/72 Divided out of 1303178 Heading C3P Marine antifouling compositions comprise an antifouling agent and a water-insoluble hydrophilic acrylic resin which is capable of absorbing at least 20% of its own weight of water. The resin is preferably a polymer of a hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkoxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylamide, N-alkylacrylamide, methacrylamide, N-alkylmethacrylamide or diacetone acrylamide; exemplified are poly- (2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate), poly(2-hydroxy propyl methacrylate), copoly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/acrylic acid), copoly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), copoly-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), copoly (t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate/N - isopropylacrylamide/2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and copoly - (2 - hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate). The antifouling agent is preferably an organolead compound but may also be a copper or mercury compound, an organotin compound or an organic compound. Antifouling agents used in the examples are triphenyl lead acetate, hexachlorophene, tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, bis- (tri-n-butyltin) oxide, triphenyltin chloride, tributyltinfluoride, triphenyl lead chloride, triphenyl lead laurate, 1,2,3-trichloro-4,6-dinitrobenzene, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>-oxybisphenoxarsine, mercurous chloride and cuprous oxide. The compositions may also include conventional pigments or fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, iron oxide and talc, and may be applied as solutions in organic solvents (e.g. alcohols, alcohol-ethers) or as aqueous dispersions.
