Abstract

1302789 Dental implant PLESSEY CO Ltd 10 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 55977/70 Heading A5R An insert for insertion into an alveolus in the jaw to form an anchor for a denture plate includes a member having at least one substantially cone shaped portion 1 and means for releasably securing the member to a denture plate, the member being of a biocompatible material. A single cone shaped portion 1 may be inserted into the alveolus remaining after the extraction of an incisor, or a plurality of cone shaped portions (9) Fig. 5 (not shown) in the alveolus of a molar or premolar. The insert is secured to the denture plate by means of an elongated stub 2 which is engageable in a corresponding aperture in the plate. The insert may be formed wholly of glassy, vitreous or pyrolytic carbon which are biocompatible, or alternatively just the outer surface of the insert which contacts the alveolus is of the carbon. Grooves (11) Fig. 3, (not shown) or transverse holes (12), Fig. 4 (not shown) may be formed in the conical portion to aid the ingrowth of jawbone and enable the insert to be rigidly held in the jaw. The surface of the conical surface may alternatively be roughened for this purpose.
