Abstract

1302650 Spin-drawing polyethylene terephthalate filaments SOC DE LA VISCOSE SUISSE 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 23010/71 Heading B5B In a continuous process polyethylene terephthalate filaments 2 are extruded from an extruder 1, quenched by a blast of air 3, lubricated by a finish applicator system 5 and the resultant filaments are drawn at a draw ratio of at least 5À0, prior to wind up 8 at a speed of at least 1,800 metres/min. by passing them from a feed roll system 6 comprising at least two cylindrical rolls to a draw roll system 7 comprising at least two cylindrical rolls in which the axis of the feed roll from which the filaments leave and the axis of the draw roll at which the filaments arrive are parallel and the axes of the rolls in the feed roll system and the axes of the rolls in the draw roll system respectively are skew set, the surface temperature of the feed rolls is 75-130‹ C., the surface temperature of the draw rolls is 180-240‹ C., and each roll in the feed and draw roll systems has a surface roughness which allows the filaments to slip during 1 to 5 turns before they leave the feed rolls and after they arrive at the draw rolls, gradual drawing of the filaments being thereby started as they pass round the last 1-5 turns of the feed rolls and completed after 1-5 turns on the draw rolls. The preferred surface roughness of the feed and draw rolls is defined in the Specification in terms of specific measurable quantities, the surfaces of the rolls being roughened by, for example, controlled sandblasting followed by galvanic metal coating, depositing metals in crystalline form from a gaseous phase or by affixing small metallic globules of different sizes so that feed and draw roll surfaces consist of a coherent non-porous coating of tiny, smooth-topped elevations of unequal height and irregular distribution. The lubricating finish applied to the filaments before stretching is suitably a mixture of isooctyl stearate and an ethoxylated emulsifying agent preferably containing not more than 10% by weight of water. Examples relate to the production of polyethylene terephthalate filaments with draw ratios above 5À0 using feed and draw rolls heated to within the specified temperature range. In Examples IV-VI the filaments are pre-tensioned prior to stretching and relaxed and stabilized at 235‹ C. using heated relaxation rolls after stretching and prior to wind-up.
