Abstract

1302522 Mattresses &c R VALE & A F WINDER 14 Jan 1970 [31 Oct 1968] 51624/68 Heading A4M [Also in Division A5] A mattress or cushion comprises a flexible envelope partly filled with a viscous aqueous gel capable of plastic flow under the weight of the user. The gel has a viscosity exceeding 100 poise at 25‹ C. and a specific heat of at least 0À5. The gel may include methyl cellulose, sodium alginate, gelatine, starch or polyvinyl alcohol. The envelope may have a filler opening with a removable closure member. Water may be added through the opening to a gel forming substance in the envelope. The mattress or cushion may be quilted to define a plurality of separate compartments each containing the gel. The mattress may incorporate an electrical resistance heater. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a mattress, particularly for use in surgical operations comprises a control compartment 4 bounded on three sides by a compartment 1, 2, 3. Flaps 5, 6 are provided for wrapping around a patient's arms and straps 7, 8 pass over the patient's legs and are secured at retainers 9 on the mattress. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, a mattress has five compartments 10-14, bands 15 for holding the patient's legs and end-flaps 16, 17 for securing the mattress.
