Handles.-A handle is detachably secured to the blade of a shovel, scoop, spade, or the like, by means acting to clamp the end of the handle in the roll of the blade and against an opposite seating. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the blade 1 having the usual up-set roll 2, is provided with a seating 4 in the form of a curved cross-pin riveted at its ends 5 in the roll 2. The handle 7 or a tubular extension thereof is cut away so as to pass between the roll 2 and the seating 4, and is provided with a locking or clamping block 11 pivoted at 12 and operable by a screw 14 to clamp the handle against the roll 2 and the block 11 against the seating 4, a groove in the block 11 engaging the seat,ing to prevent withdrawal. A pin 10 may strengthen the semi-tubular end of the extension 7, and this end may be further strengthened by an additional thickness of sheet metal. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, a wedge 14<1> is driven between the block 11 and handle 7, in place of the screw 14. As shown in Fig. 5, the block 11 is omitted and the wedge 14<1> is driven in between the handle 7 and the roll 2, the handle being notched to engage the seating 4.
