WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 22' 920- RENEWED FEB- 8| 192?.

UNITED STATES PAUL OHN TUMULLA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed March 22, 1920, Serial No. 36?,784. Renewed February 8, 1921. Serial No. 443,493.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PAUL J. TUMULLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench and has for its primary object the construction of a wrench in which the various parts are so constructed and associated that an adjustment may be more quickly accomplished and besides the object more effectively gripped.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of connecting the handle member so that the teeth thereof may be accurately associated with the teeth of the shank.
A feature of my invention is the use of a movable gripping member so that the object may be more effectively gripped.
Withthese and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein: Y I
Figure 1 is-a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention.
moved.
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view through the gripping member.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which my invention may be constructed the numeral 1 designates a stationary jaw to which is connected a shank 2 that has its free end formed into a handle 3. Teeth 4: are arranged along one edge of the shank. Slidably supported by the shank V is the movable jaw 5 which consists of a body portion 6 embracing the shank and the plate 7 bolted to the body portion and. engaging behind the shoulder 8 of the body to reinforce the rivets or bolts against a shear ing stress. A handle member 9 has aloose connection 10 with a pin 11 so that the teeth 12 thereof may be accurately associated with the teeth I or readily removed from the teeth 4: so as to allow quick adjustment.
Besides the foregoing advantage the loose connection enables the upper end of the member 9 to abut the wall 13 so as to give Fig. 2 is a similar view with the plate re-:.
a more substantial bearing and prevent distortion of the pin 11. I have found out from practice it is advantageous to have the gripping portion of one of the edges movable so j as to accomplish a more accurate connection with the object acted upon. The gripping member 14 is provided with a pair of pintles 15 so that the member may have locking movement for effectively holding the memher in place and at the same time allow it to be readily removed I provide a hole 16in the body 5 and a hole 17 in the plate. From this construction itjwill be seen that the gripping member is removably supported in a very substantial manner and allowed to have a rocking movement, so as to assume. the most advantageous position when gripping the object.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention'what I claim is: a.
1. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a shank connected thereto and having its free end formed into a handle and further v I having teeth formed along'one edge thereof, a movable jaw mounted on the shank, a handle member having a deplaceable connection with the movable jaw and provided with teeth for engagement with the teeth to the movable jaw constructed to have detachable engagement with said shank, and
a" gripping member, said gripping member.
having pintles projecting therefrom, and
said movable jaw consisting of a body having a hole receiving one of the pintles and a plate bolted to the body having a hole :receiving the other pintle'.
In testimon whereof I aifix my signature.
AUL JOHN TUMULLA.
