Abstract

1302386 Ships WORTHINGTON CORP 18 March 1970 [2 Feb 1970] 13160/70 Headings B7A and B7V Acatamaran, particularly for oil slick recovery, is powered by two water jet engines 18 and 20 from which thrust can be diverted to thrust outlets 44, 46, 48 and 50, which outlets can be opened and closed selectively from a control panel 22 to move the boat sideways or to turn it about a vertical axis. Each water jet engine is powered by a propeller, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is driven through a centrifugal clutch 240 by a rotary piston engine 72. Water is taken in through an inlet protected by slats 232 and is passed to an outlet 84. The size of the outlet opening and thus the forward thrust on the boat is controlled by a pivoted gate 88 which is operated from the control panel by a sheathed cable 238. The outlet regions of the water jet engines are connected to the thrust outlets 46 and 50, to reverse thrust outlets 102, and, through ducts 52 and 56, to the thrust outlets 44 and 48. The outlets are controlled by flap valves, e.g. 108, 118 and 122, which are operated by sheathed cables from the control panel. Each jet engine includes a propeller housing 80 releasably secured to a one-piece aluminium casting which is itself secured to a hull of the boat and which mounts the engine 72. Removable cover-plates 236 give access to the water passageways in the jet engines. Each member 70 includes a hollow forward section filled with buoyant solid foam. The boat has a rudder 98 whose shaft (214), Fig. 7 (not shown), turns in a block (200) which is pivoted about a horizontal axis to support brackets (190, 192). Shear pins (210) normally maintain the block fixed relative to the brackets, but, if the rudder encounters an obstacle, the pins break allowing the rudder shaft to pivot upwardly. The oil recovery system includes a roller 25 which has an oil-absorbent surface and which is rotated in the water by a motor 29. A presser roller 33 squeezes oil from the roller 25 into onboard storage devices (not shown). The two hulls of the catamaran act to channel oil towards the roller 25 and the channelling effect is increased by bow wings 26. The catamaran may have alternative or additional functions, e.g. trash gathering, weed cutting, fire fighting, oil boom laying and fishing.
