Abstract
1302072 Ratchet mechanism MOTOROLA Inc 15 June 1970 [17 June 1969] 28812/70 Heading F2Q A double pawl mechanism for transforming reciprocating motion of an armature 31 into stepped rotary motion of a ratchet wheel 35 comprises a unitary pawl element 33 made of resilient plastic or metal material of substantially rectangular or square shape and having a pair of pawls 36, 37 adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 35 which is disposed in an opening in the centre of the pawl element 33. The armature 31 is moved in one direction by energization of a solenoid 29, and is returned by a spring 32, the pawl element 33 being secured to the end of the armature 31. The ratchet wheel 35 has four teeth 43. Movement of armature 31 to the left from the position shown in Fig. 3 causes a rotation of 45 degrees of the ratchet wheel 35 due to engagement of pawl 36 with the top tooth 43. A further 45 degree rotation is effected by the engagement of pawl 37 with the bottom tooth 43 on the return stroke. A locking surface 46 on the pawl element 33 prevents overrunning and a projection 51 prevents backrunning of the racthet wheel. The mechanism operates a cam 20 for positioning a magnetic tape head 12 in a multi-track cartridge-type tape player.
