Abstract

1301958 Machinery safety devices EMAIL Ltd 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 24670/71 Heading F2J A sliding door latch 18 of a washing and/or spin drying machine, or cooking stove, loading/ unloading doors 12 is interlocked with and mechanically actuated, via a lever 24 fulcrumed at 25, by a pull/push on/off manual control knob 17 operating the machine timer control switch (controlling the electric power supply to the machine) mounted on a forwardly facing control panel 15 of (as shown) a top loading agitation type washing machine whereby the door 12 cannot be opened until the control knob 17 is moved inward to the "off" position of the timer control switch, so that the machine cannot be started when the door is open and the door cannot be opened while the machine is running. The door latch 18 is slidably spring loaded at 21, 22 against the under side of the top wall of the machine and has a tongue 30 engageable with a slot 31 in the top wall when the machine is switched off and the door 12 is open, thus preventing outward movement of the switch knob to the "on" position. On closing the door 2, a hooked catch 34 passes through the slot 31 to engage and downwardly depress a plate 33 fast with the latch 18 whereby the tongue 30 is released from the slot 31 and the switch knob 17 may be outwardly moved to the "on" position whereby the fulcrumed lever 24 backwardly slides the door latch 18 to engage and lock the door catch 34 in an "L" shaped slot 32 of the latch 18 whereby the door is locked in its closed position. Additionally, as a further safety feature, the agitation and/or spin dryers rotatably stationary outer drum 9 has a projecting lever 36 whereby excessive out of balance movement of the drum 9, i.e. offcentre gyration of the work basket during spin drying &c., results in the lever 36 striking a plate 37 of the door catch 18 whereby the resulting forward movement thereof moves, via the fulcrumed lever 24, the control knob 17 to its "off" position to switch off the machine.
