1301810 Coating foodstuffs R ANGOLD 15 Sept 1971 43039/71 Heading A2A [Also in Division B2] A method of coating articles of food with breadcrumbs or the like comprises feeding the articles from a hopper 10 into a rotatable drum 16 and tumbling them therein by rotating the drum, causing them to move through the drum and scooping the coating material from a reservoir 6, 8 thereof exterior to the drum and allowing the material to fall under gravity through perforations in the circumferential surface of the drum. The coating drum comprises perforate sections 17 and inperforate sections 17' 18', the section 18' providing a friction surface whereby the drum is supported and driven by rollers 20. Attached to the outer surface of the drum are two scoops 30 which are diametrically opposed. As the drum rotates these scoops remove coating liquid from a trough or reservoir 6 and lift it above the drum to cascade through the perforate surface of the drum and moisten the articles to be coated, excess material returning to the trough 6. Similar scoops 32 are mounted on the imperforate surface 17' but are located at positions 90‹ away from the positions of scoops 30. Coating material scooped from a reservoir 8 enter the drum through perforations adjacent the position at which the scoops join the portion 17'. Excess coating material returns to the reservoir 8 via the second perforate section 17. Flanges 19 locate the drum relative to the support rollers 19 and an internal flange 19 prevents mixture of the two types of coating material. An apertured end plate 15 is provided adjacent the hopper 10 so that the articles enter the drum successively. A large vertical hopper may be provided to feed the breadcrumbs or the like to the reservoir 8.
