Abstract

1300890 Laying fabrics G STUMPF 30 June 1971 [7 July 1970 5 Aug 1970] 30731/71 Heading D1S A fabric laying machine comprises a laying carriage 5 displaceable over the top 1 of a laying table by wheels 6 running on rails 4, a second carriage 8 displaceable transversely to the direction of travel of the carriage 5 for maintaining edge alignment of the fabric 9 being laid, a carrier device 21 for a roll 15 of fabric to be laid mounted on the carriage 8, and a drive 22 for the roll 15 including a pinion shaft 25 extending transversely to the travel direction of the carriage 5, the shaft 25 being engaged by a gear wheel 32 provided on at least one end face of the carriage 8. The rails 4 are of circular-section and the wheels 6 are correspondingly grooved. Similarly, the carriage 8 is provided with grooved rollers 10 running on circular-section rails 11. Edge alignment of the fabric 9 is effected by a device 12 controlled by photocells which scan the fabric edges and which has a pinion 13 meshing with a rack 14 on the carriage 8. A fabric feed roller 17 is driven in synchronism with the speed of the carriage 5. A laying head 19 is secured to the carriage 5 and comprises two blades 18a, 18b and may be suspended on a chain from the carriage 5 so as to be automatically or vertically adjustable in height corresponding to the height of the laid stack 9a. The pinion shaft 25 is driven from one wheel 6, right-hand of Fig. 1, by chains 28 and electromagnetic couplings and/or free wheel arrangements 27. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, the drive 22 comprises two rollers 33 having gears 35 on the ends of the shafts 34 thereof. The gear 32 has a gear 36 on the shaft thereof and a chain 37 passes around the gears 35, 36 to drive the rollers 33 from the shaft 25. The ends of a rod 40 carrying the roll 15 are received in slots 39 in brackets 38 on the device 21. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the drive 22 comprises a roller 41 driven from the shaft 25 by gears 32, 44, 43 and a chain 45. An obliquely inclined board 46, provided with a low coefficient of friction coating, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, is mounted on the device 21 and is provided with a lateral stop 49 for the roll 15. The inclination of the board 46 is adjustable by a device 47. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, the drive 22 comprises two convergent rows 50 of rollers 51 driven from the shaft 25 by gears 32, 53, 52, a deflecting gear 55 being provided.
