Abstract

1300886 Separation of formic and acetic acids KURARAY CO Ltd 11 June 1971 [15 June 1970] 27516/71 Heading C2C Aqueous mixtures of formic and acetic acid are separated by azeotropically distilling the water and formic acid from the acetic acid by using methyl isopropyl ketone as an entrainer. The steps of the process comprise an initial distillation with methyl isopropyl ketone to leave acetic acid as the residue, azeotropic distillation of the distillate to separate solvent and water with formic acid as the residue, condensation of the distillate to a two-phase liquid and recycling of the ketone rich phase to the first distillation. Examples are described using two distillation columns, condenser and separator.
