Abstract
1300754 Steam jet conveyers BRADFORD DYERS' ASSOCIATION Ltd 3 Dec 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 43599/69 Heading B8A [Also in Division D1 In a method of steaming crimped yarn, the yarn is introduced into a duct through which steam flows and further steam is caused to flow through the bottom of the duct at an angle to the direction of travel of the yarn to both lift and forward the yarn in a virtually tensionless state. The yarn 15 is introduced into a steam duct 2, the steam being introduced into the duct 2 by means of nozzles at the yarn inlet end, and further steam being introduced by means of openings or nozzles in the base of the duct, which openings or nozzles communicate with a steam chest 7 below the duct 2. The steam is introduced into the steam chest 7 at such velocity and pressure that the steam issuing from the openings or nozzles lifts the yarn and imparts a forwarding motion thereto. The steam is withdrawn at the yarn exit end of the duct. In a preferred embodiment, several ducts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are positioned one above another, and the yarn passes through the ducts in zig-zag fashion. The yarn may be guided by rollers 17 driven at the same linear speed as the yarn. The base of each duct 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 is preferably transversely corrugated whereby the yarn is conveyed on a turbulent flow of steam. After leaving the duct 6, the yarn is preferably passed through a water duct 12 in which the yarn is conveyed by the water and cooled thereby. The yarn is then passed via pressure rolls 43 and hot air blower 38 to a drier 36. The steam withdrawn from the ducts 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 is preferably conveyed to the drier 36 and passed over steam-heated pipes 44 to issue through openings 45 into a duct 14. In a preferred embodiment, several yarns are steamed side-by-side, the ducts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 having adjustable side walls to accommodate the varying number of yarns. The steam is preferably introduced into the ducts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and associated steam chests 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 by means of boxsection nozzles extending the width of the ducts and chests respectively.
