Abstract

1300682 Sleeves for gown RAYCHEM CORP 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 25242/71 Heading A3V [Also in Divisions D1] A process for gathering a fabric comprises attaching a heat-recoverable material 4, which is elastomeric in at least its heat-stable form, to a portion of a fabric 3 Fig. 1 and heating the material to cause it to recover and gather the fabric Fig. 2. The fabric may be non-woven or of paper or plastics material, and may be part of a disposable garment. The heat-recoverable material is preferably attached by contact cement, pressure sensitive adhesive, sewing, or heatsealing. In the latter case recovery may occur simultaneously with the heat-sealing. The heat-recoverable material may be covered. It may have different degrees of recovery in different parts. The heat for recovery may be applied by hot air gun, an iron or an oven. The heat-recoverable material is preferably a block copolymer of the form A-B-A, where A is a non-elastomeric polymer block and B is an elastomeric polymer block. Preferred molecular weights and glass transition temperatures for the polymers are stated. Block B preferably comprises polymers of aliphatic conjugated dienes, e.g. isoprene, methyl isoprene, butadiene homopolymers or copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile. Block A is preferably a polymer of styrene, methyl styrene or chloro-styrene. Alternatively the heat recoverable material is crystalline neoprene rubber or an ethylenepropylene copolymer elastomer. It may include fillers, anti-oxidants, flame retardants and pigments, and is preferably cross-linked.
