Abstract

1300319 Foam core laminates METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 10 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969 7 Nov 1969 5 March 1970] 43432/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A method of making a moisture-resistant synthetic cardboard comprises the steps of: (a) interposing between two webs of paper a plastics material containing a normally solid expanding agent, said plastics material being selected from polyolefines, polyamides, polyesters, mixtures of polyolefines with polyesters, polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of ethylene with one or more of propylene, butadiene, butylene, isobutylene vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile and styrene; and (b) heating the resulting assembly in the absence of added steam to a temperature above the expanding temperature of the plastics whereby the assembly is expanded and there is formed a synthetic cardboard comprising a core of expanded plastics externally faced with paper. Specified expanding agents are materials which are normally solid but which when heated or chemically reacted with a second substance decompose with the evolution of gases, e.g. sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrite, ammonium carbamate, metal powders admixed with solid acids or solid alkalis, azo compounds, sulphohydrazides, N- nitroso compounds or azides, substituted thiatriazoles, benzene sulphohydrazide, diphenylsulpho - 3,5<SP>1</SP> - disulphohydrazide, benzene - 1,3- disulphohydrazide, dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, N,N<SP>1</SP> - dinitroso - N,N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl terephthalamide, terephthalazide and p-tert.- butyl benzamide. The expanding agent may be mixed with the plastics material in the form of a concentrate; alternatively, the expanding agent may be added in the form of a mixture with a neutral solvent. Many types of additional additives which may be admixed with the plastics material are specified. The plastics material which may be partially pre-expanded may be applied in the form of a film or sheet, as a powder, as a paste, in solution or in the form of a dispersion. The paper webs may be creped, sized, coated, coloured, patterned, decorated, embossed, flocked, lacquered or printed. A reinforcing interlayer of a flexible or rigid perforated sheet, paper, card, expanded metal or of continuous filaments or staple fibres in the form of a fabric, mat, net, plaited network, fleece or honeycomb may be provided within the plastics layer, said interlayer extending over all or part of the surface area of the product. The plastics material may be applied to one or both of the paper webs prior to assembly and expansion. Expansion may be effected continuously, e.g. by conducting the paper webs over one or more heated rolls or batchwise at ambient pressure or under a slight applied pressure.
