Abstract

1299888 Administering enemas E LEPAR 26 Nov 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 57942/69 Heading A5R Equipment for use in administering enemas through colostomies or the anus for radiology comprises a catheter 15, apertured at both ends, extending through a flexible inflatable obturator 7 intended to be positioned externally of a patient's body, and a sealing means 14 on the side of the obturator adjacent the body, the obturator having connected thereto means for moving it to the patient's body. The moving means may comprise a body encircling strap 8 attached to lugs 10 on fastening straps 9 passing over the outer and inner surfaces of the generally venticular obturator. An annular sealing ring 14 of porous sponge rubber 14 with an impervious surface layer 14a surrounds the catheter on the side of the obturator which in use is pressed against the body. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) for anal administration of enemas the obturator (22) is frusto-conical in shape and provided with stiffening ribs (26) in its side walls. Mooring straps (23), Fig. 4 (not shown) and (24, 25) pass around the legs and the trunk of the body respectively. The material of the catheter, obturator and mooring means may be X-ray translucent, and an X-ray opaque marking ning 21 may be provided around the catheter, positioned so as to be adjacent the stoma or anus when in use.
