Abstract
1299870 Electroluminescence MARCONI CO Ltd 21 Jan 1970 [8 May 1969] 23556/69 Heading C4S [Also in Division G5] An electroluminescent display device comprises superimposed layers of electroluminescent and semi-conductor material between two sets of crossed conductors A 1 A 2 A 3 ... An, B 1 B 2 B 3 ... B n , the layers being continuous sheets or matrices of discrete elements, the semi-conductor material having a high resistance when a low voltage is applied and a low resistance when a voltage above a critical value is applied, means 3 for applying a first voltage between a selected conductor in each set sufficient to maintain but not produce luminescence and means S for applying a supplementary voltage pulse which superimposed on the first voltage produces luminescence. The voltage pulses are applied via distributor switches SA, SB to produce scanning of the device. The source S applies A.C. or D.C. potential, if D.C. is used a pulse of opposite polarity will extinguish luminescence. The semi-conductor may be a chalcogenide glass.
