Abstract

1299820 Cable joints and terminations INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 15 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 43063/71 Heading H2E In a method of cutting the corrugated metal sheath 12 of an oil-filled cable 11 prior to forming or building up a joint, termination or sealing end, the sheath is reduced to cylindrical form closely fitting the cable core over length A an aperture 23 is formed in the sheath upstream of the reduced section, a valve 15 is secured over the aperture to prevent flow of oil from within the sheath and the sheath is cut at the reduced section, insulting oil being supplied to the interior of the sheath through valve 15 for a period commencing prior to cutting the sheath and continuing till the sheath is re-closed. The oil introduced compensates for the small amount escaping from the cut portion of the sheath through the restricted flow passage 13. The valve 15 may be secured to the sheath by welding support member 16 to it, preferably prior to forming aperture 23.
