Abstract

1299616 Piezo-electric ceramic materials PLESSEY CO Ltd 7 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 25244/70 Heading C1J [Also in Division H1] A method of manufacturing a ceramic piezo-electric lithium niobate includes the steps: providing an electroded ceramic compact; applying an electric field while the temperature is raised above 5/6 of the melting temperature in ‹ K., to simultaneously sinter and polarize the material; and finally cooling the poled compact while maintaining the electric field until the temperature is below the Curie temperature. LiNbO 3 is made by grinding together equimolar proportions of Li 2 CO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 which are then calcined at 800‹ C. for 1¢ hours, then ground in acetone, and then isostatically compacted into shape. The compacted material is sintered and polarized at a temperature of 1200‹ C. (see Division H1). The lithium in the compact may be partially substituted by Ta, Ti, Zr, Mo or W and the lithium niobate compact may additionally include Na, Cd or Mg.
