Abstract

1299441 Photographic direct positive colour process AGFA GEVAERT 26 Jan 1970 [4 Feb 1969] 5979/69 Addition to 990628 Heading G2C [Also in Division C2] A photographic direct positive colour image is made by (i) exposing a photographic element containing a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and in the emulsion layer, or in another layer or layers in water-permeable relationship therewith, a colour coupler which on colour development forms a dye which on treatment with a strongly acidic solution is converted into colourless products, and a quinolene hydrazone compound which forms an acid-resistant cyan dye by oxidative coupling with the colour coupler, (ii) developing the element in a colour developer, (iii) treating the element in an oxidative bleaching bath e.g. of potassium ferricyanide, (iv) treating the element in a strongly acidic solution and (v) at a point not before (ii) fixing the element, thus forming colourless products at the exposed areas where colour development initially occurred and a positive colour image in the unexposed areas where oxidative coupling occurred; the quinolene hydrazone compound having the general formula:- where Ar is substituted or unsubstituted aryl e.g. phenyl; R 1 is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or amino any of which may be substituted e.g. hexadecyl or substituted phenyl; R 2 is alkyl which may be substituted e.g. methyl; and M is H or an alkali metal ion. The quinolone hydrazone and colour coupler are preferably used in the red-sensitive emulsion layer of a direct positive multi-colour material also containing green and blue-sensitive emulsion layers containing oxidative coupling compounds and couplers.
