Abstract

1299122 Surgical dressing JOHNSON & JOHNSON 12 Jan 1970 [11 Jan 1969] 1397/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] An absorbent surgical sponge comprises at least two plies of non-woven fabric, each of the plies having unidirectional fibre orientation and being a substantially continuous web of non woven fabric, each ply having a long-tocross tensile strength ratio of at least 3:2, one of the plies being located in a plane substantially parallel to that of the other with the principal axis of fibre orientation of one ply being at about right angles to the principal axis of fibre orientation of the other ply, and plies being secured together at the edge or edges of the sponge. The non-woven fabric which may be made from rayon or fully bleached cotton, may have a weight of at least 150 grains per square yard and should be capable of being sterilized. The sponge may comprise two layers of non-woven fabric with an intermediate layer of absorbent material which may be a further layer or layers of non- woven material, wood pulp fluff, absorbent paper or fibrous carded or felted filler. The plies may be adhesively secured together about the edges or sewn together. The sponge may be of any regular or irregular outline, e.g. rectangular, circular or triangular, and may be provided with a tape loop. The sponge may include a non-absorbent layer, e.g. an impervious film.
