Abstract

1299105 Curing 1,2-polybutadienes FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 23 March 1970 [24 April 1969] 14048/70 Heading C3P A curable composition comprises (a) 100 parts by weight of a butadiene polymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of 12,500 to 55,000 and a molecular weight distribution such that at least 50% of the polymer has a molecular weight of at least 10,000 and at least 95% of the polymer has a molecular weight of at least 2000 and at least 80% of the butadiene units being in the 1,2-configuration, and (b) a peroxy compound of formula wherein each R represents a C 1-20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical in an amount equivalent to 0À5-8 parts by weight of dicumyl peroxide. The polymer can be a copolymer with, for example, styrene, and styrene and methyl naphthalene. The composition may contain fillers, bonding agents such as vinyl triacetoxy silane, lubricants such as calcium stearate, and polymerizable monomers. It is thought that the composition cures by polymerization of the vinyl group in the polymer.
