Abstract

1299067 Colouring polymers DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 10 Feb 1970 [11 Feb 1969 21 Aug 1969] 6389/70 Heading C3P A process for forming coloured particles of a plastics material, comprises (a) forming a first dispersion of particles of a plastics material comprising polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride copolymer, after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride and/or chlorinated polyethylene in water and/or a swelling agent for the plastics material, (b) adding a second dispersion of particles of an insoluble pigment in a swelling agent for the plastics material or in a mixture of such a swelling agent with water to the first dispersion, and agitating the resulting dispersion to cause the particles of pigment to form a coating upon the surface of the particles of the plastics material without causing reduction of the particle size of the particles of plastics material, and (c) separating the coated particles of plastics material thus formed. An aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride copolymer, or a polymer of other ethylenically unsaturated monomers e.g. polybutyl acrylate, or a polyester may be added to the dispersion obtained before the coated particles are separated off in order to more permanently fix the pigment to the plastics material. Exemplified swelling agents are acetone, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform and dimethyl sulphoxide.
