Abstract

1298953 Detecting fabric defects photoelectrically ENSHU Ltd 9 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 60090/69 Heading G1A Defects in fabric 14 coming off a loom are detected by a light source/photo-detector arrangement 18-19 and the cumulative defect total is indicated by the position of a marker 36 on a dial 3 which also indicates by means of a marker 34 the amount of fabric passing over the roller 16. The marker 34 displays the output of a photodetector 31 separated from a light source 29 by a rotating apertured disc 26. Each rotation by the marker 34 of an angle # - see Fig. 3 - corresponds to a complete length of finished fabric, so when marker 34 contacts the fixed abutment 37, a signal is produced which actuates a device for making a cut mark on the fabric. The marker 36 also rotates anti-clockwise, and at the beginning of each cycle is automatically reset to be an angle # 2 behind marker 34. This angle # 2 represents the greatest permissible defect count per unit length for A-grade fabric, and if marker 36 contacts marker 34 during a revolution, this gives a visual indication that the corresponding fabric piece is not A-grade. The output of the photo-cell 19 is also supplied to a comparator device, 6, Fig. 1 (not shown) which also receives an input from a reference information source (7) which indicates the maximum number of defects and rate of defect formation that are allowable. If either of these is exceeded the loom is stopped and an alarm lamp is actuated. The defect signals from the photo-cell are also supplied to a recorder (9). The elongated source 18 may be replaced by a scanning source.
