Abstract

1298641 Ratchet mechanism COMBUSTION ENG Inc 4 Jan 1971 [5 Jan 1970] 319/71 Heading F2Q [Also in Division G6] A nuclear reactor control rod anti-ejection lock for use with magnetic jacking type control rod drives has a spring-pressed pawl 60 which ratchets to allow insertion of the control rod 12 but prevents ejection or withdrawal unless a latch mechanism of the drive is in latched position. The drive comprises two axially spaced, axially movable drive members 34, 36 around the rod 12 and solenoids A, C, E selectively alternately moving the members 34, 36 in two opposite directions along or with the rod 10. Each member 34, 36 carries a latch 38, 48 and an axially movable sleeve 40, 50, selectively operated by solenoids B, D, to operate the latch to connect or disconnect the rod and respective drive member. A push-rod 80, 82 connects each sleeve 40, 50 and the pawl 60 and disables the pawl when either sleeve 40, 50 is in position to latch the control rod and a drive member. Starting from the position shown in which all the solenoids are de-energized and the control rod 12 has dropped under gravity, and in which both moving members 34, 36 and both sleeves 40, 50 are in the lower position, in order to lift the control rod the solenoid D is first energized to lift sleeve 50 and force the latch 48 inwardly to grip the rod 12, also to raise push-rod 82 and disable the pawl 60. Solenoid C is then energized to lift the lower moving member 36 and the rod 12 latched thereto. Actuation of solenoid B follows to lift sleeve 40 and force the latch 38 into gripping relation with the rod 12. Both latches are now in gripping relation. Solenoid D is then de-energized to release the latch 48 and allow sleeve 50 to drop and solenoid C is de-energized. Solenoid A is then energized to raise the upper moving member 34 together with the rod 12 and solenoid E is energized to draw the lower moving member 36 down. Solenoid D is now energized so as again to activate the latch 48 and solenoid B is then deenergized to release the latch 38 and solenoids A and E are de-energized. Solenoid C is then energized to lift the lower moving member 36 and the rod 12 and begin another cycle. The control rod 12 is thus lifted in a step-by-step motion.
