1298634 Retaining supporting air within tubes DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 3 Feb 1970 5207/70 Heading B5A In a process of stretching extruded plastics tubing 4 e.g. which is then cut into lengths for ammunition cartridges, pressurized supporting air e.g. at 4 atmospheres, admitted to the tube interior is maintained therein by a ferromagnetic closure plug, located within the tube at a clearance 5 and which is retained against axial displacement by a plurality of axially spaced magnetic field, each being of a length corresponding to that of plug portions 3a of greater cross-section area than intermediate portion 3. The magnetic field may act transversely of the tubing, when applied by a plurality of radially aligned pole shoe pairs, as in Fig. 1, or may act axially when the shoes of opposed polarity are staggered axially of the tubing, as in Fig. 2 (not shown). In the described embodiment, Fig. 5, continuously extruded polyethylene tubing containing pressurized air is heated to its crystalline melting point, by passage through a heating bath, prior to radial expansion by the pressurized air with simultaneous axial stretching by members (not shown) which act on the tubing and move therewith, the stretched tubing 8 being delivered by a device 7 to loop upon a grid 9, wherefrom it is intermittently drawn by means 11, comprising tube clamps 13, and fed to an intermittently actuated cutter 12, the action whereof is initiated when the tube end abuts a stop 15. The ferromagnetic plug 17 is located intermediate the means 11 and the cutter 12, and the tube passes through a bend 18 which prevents ejection of the plug 17 in the event of excess air pressure or magnetic field failure.
