Abstract

Twine type yarns are made by extruding fluent synthetic resin in sheet or tubular form, if the latter, converting the tube into sheet form, and if desired, cutting the sheet into strips or bands, orientating the extruded material longitudinally until it will split over its area and twisting to form a twine type yarn of split sheet, strips or band. In a modification, an extruded tube is orientated prior to cutting into sheet form. Specified synthetic resins include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyesters and admixtures thereof, polypropylene being preferred. Fibrilation may be assisted if necessary by the action of friction on the material e.g. by brushing. Orientation may be effected by passing the material through hot air or hot liquid and stretching longitudinally suitably to a draw ratio of 11 to 1. Where polypropylene is used temperatures of 280 to 300 DEG F. for hot air and 245 to 280 DEG F. for hot liquid (e.g. glycol and water) are suitable. Yarns so made are useful as baler twine, ropes, nets and cordage.
