Abstract
129,829. Liversedge, A. J., and Davidson, W. B. July 29, 1918. Washers.-A number of washing-chambers are superposed one upon another or arranged side by side, and the washing water or liquid is continuously circulated through each chamber. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a number of chambers are formed by a tier of trays C, C<1> - - Cx each provided with slotted openings J having lips extending upwards, and with pointed projections extending downwards from the undersides. The slotted openings in alternate trays are at rightar, gles to one another. Above the slotted openings are baffle-plates K for breaking the upwardlymoving gas into streams, and between the openings are spraying-pipes l. The liquor accumulated in each tray passes to the inlet side of a pump, the outlet side of which is connected with the corresponding spraying pipes l, so that the liquor is continuously circulated. A separate pump may be used for each chamber, all the pumps being, if desired, mounted on the same rotary shaft; or a single pump may be arranged to operate all the circulating systems. The gas is admitted at e and leaves at u, the uppermost chamber Z being fitted with tubes S and baffle-plates t to cause the issuing gas to deposit entangled liquid, which passes by drain-pipes into the chamber y below. On starting the apparatus, the trays are filled with liquid to the level of the upstanding lips thereon by admitting liquid to the chamber y. The pumps are then started and the gas admitted, the liquid being broken up into spray as it enters each chamber and subsequently collected in a tray beneath for circulation.
