Abstract
1298287 Moulding foamed thermoplastic articles SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 10 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58789/70 Heading B5A In a method of making a shaped thermoplastic article having a foamed core and an unfoamed outer layer, particles of (a) a thermoplastic resin containing a solid thermally decomposable blowing agent and (b) a thermoplastic resin not containing such a blowing agent and having a lower heat capacity than particles (a), are introduced into a mould, and the mould heated and rotated; the particles (b), since they have a lower heat capacity than the particles (a), melt first and adhere to the mould surface as it rotates to form the unfoamed outer layer, while on further heating the particles (b) melt and the blowing agent contained therein decomposes to form the foamed core of the article. Preferably the ratio of the heat capacity of particles (a) to the heat capacity of particles (b) is greater than 50 and less than 1000. The difference in heat capacities is effected either by using different resins for the outer layer and core, or by using the same resin throughout, the particles (a) being in this case larger than the particles (b). Examples are described involving polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, methacrylic resin, acrylonitrilebutadiene - styrene copolymer, acrylonitrile - styrene copolymer and polycarbonate resins. Blowing agents mentioned are dinitropentamethylene tetramine, dimethyldinitrosoterephthalazide, benzene sulphonyl hydrazide, toluenesulphonylhydrazide, azobisisobutyronitrile, diazoaminobenzene, trihydrazinetriazine, paratoluenesulphonylsemicarbazide, oxybisbenzenesulphonylsemicarbazide and azodicarbonamide. The particles (a) may have a lower melting point and a higher density than particles (b).
