Abstract

1298033 Ferroelectric radiation detectors CARBORUNDUM CO 30 June 1970 [7 July 1969] 31484/70 Heading H1K A radiation detector element insensitive to piezoelectric disturbance comprises a body of ferroelectric material containing at least one group of alternately oppositely polarized portions electrically connected in series. There may be several such groups in one body providing response to different light sources and several such bodies arranged side by side in a common housing Preferred materials are those with a single ferroelectric axis, such as triglycine sulphate and fluorberylate and mixtures thereof, barium and strontium niobates and mixtures thereof and sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate. A typical element 0À4 mm. thick has 13 pairs of parallel 1 Á thick gold stripes spaced 0À92 mm. centre to centre vapour deposited simultaneously or in two separate operations on its opposed faces via a wire mask. Polarization perpendicular to the faces is effected by connecting the pairs in two interleaving oppositely poled groups to a source providing a direct voltage gradient of 2400 volts/cm, for 10 minutes. For this purpose wires are attached ultrasonically or by cement containing grains of silver. After polarization the wires are reconnected to give the series connection and the element given a coating of infra-red absorptive carbon black or ultra-violet absorptive petroleum jelly. The element is then stuck to a polyethylene terephthalate sheet, peripherally supported by a brass annulus accommodating an associated preamplifier in an evacuable housing having a window of germanium, silicon, diamond, potassium bromide or calcium fluoride. In an alternative arrangement the element and an associated reference element are maintained within 0À1‹ C. of a crystallographic transition temperature in the manner described in Specification 1,289,811. Where several groups are used in a common body one or more unconnected isolating portions oppositely polarized to adjacent portions are located between the groups.
