Single-type composing and casting machines; matrices; moulds. - Relates to matrices for use in machines for casting printing-forme elements having elongated printing faces such as rules. The invention has particular reference to machines of the kind described in Specifications 7202/15 and 113,262 for casting strip material. A matrix blank 45, Fig. 5, formed, say, by stamping, is divided on a line X which gives the desired width of printing-surface forming part 44b, and a side member 21a, Fig. 6, is riveted thereto to form the side wall of the matrix cavity. By employing such a matrix, a rule for printing thick and thin lines, shown in Fig. 7, may be cast. The wall may be at rightangles to the printing-surface 44b, in which case the rule produced would have a straight side continued up to the printing-surface. Both walls may be formed in the above manner. Fig. 2 shows the matrix in position in the mould structure of the above-mentioned machine.
