Be it known that I, CARL MUnHLnisnN, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
inthe Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Means for Adjusting the Molds of Typographical Line-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specifi cation.
In the casting operation of a machine such asV that known commercially under the trade Linotype, the row of formative cavities in the composed line of matrices, lits up to the mold cavity inthe mold block. rFhis mold cavity is the mold for the body of the cast line or type bar and the said row is the mold for the type on the edge of the cast type bar. The mold block consists oi four members, the cap plate or upper wall, the bottom plate or wall and two intermediate end liners. These four members are held firmly together, the cap plate above, the bottom plate below, and an end liner at each end of the mold cavity between them.

So long as the body of the formative cavities and that of the mold cavity are the same, the line of type on the cast type bar always stands on it at an equal distance from both its sides. But if the cap plate is adjusted for a thicker body than the formative cavities require, the line of type does not stand in the middle of the cast type bar but nearer to one side of it than to the other. `If to these thicker type bars, are Aadded thinner type bars in' the same column, the distances'of the lines vof type from each other will be irregular. To make these distances equal, it has been necessary to insert leads between the cast type bars, which insertion is troublesome and The thickness of such a lead body less the portion that is occupied by the line of type. Thus it is of the cap plate, row and bottoni' plate, that the line of type on the the line -fof adjusted for casting a thick type bar; and F 6, a similar section showing the mold adjusted for casting a thin type bar,'to gethcr illustrating one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section on the crooked line T-7 of Fig. 8, and Fig. vertical section on the line h of Fig. i", together illustrating another embodiment.
Referring to Figs. l and 2, l, l are the lines of type on three bodies 2 oi the 'same size as the type; 3, 3 are the lines of type ontwo bodies l of a larger sito than the said. type il; and 5, 5 are leads inserted between the type sides ot' each body et and the adja cent body 2.
In Fig. 3, the three lines oi' type l and 2 and at are the same as in Figs. l and f2, but the two lines of' r type 3 differ from the two lines 3 of the said figures, by being at an equal distance from both sides of the respective body fl. Figs. l and 2 illustrate the practice obtaining at they date of the present invention. The present invention provides for the above mentioned distances being equal, by maintaining the longitudinal median line of gether, whereby said members are moved simultaneously and equally toward and from the median line 0I" said cavity.

A mold for a typographical line-casting machine comprising, in combination, two members forming opposite walls of the mold cavity, and adjusting means therefor, whereby said'members are moved simultaneously and equally toward and from the median line of said cavity` 8. In a mold for a typographical machine having an elongated mold walls for said cavity at a fixed distance apart to determine the length of the slug `cast therein, side walls for the cavity to determine the thickness of the slug, and adjusting means therefor, whereby said walls are simultaneously and equally moved in opposite directions-without disturbing the end walls.

In a line-casting machine wherein a composed line of matrices coperates with a slotted mold, means for holding the -matrices against end motion and in operative position, in combination with a slotted mold comprising two members between which the mold slotexists, and adjusting means for said members whereby they are simultaneously and equally moved toward and from the median line; whereby given characters may be produced centrally on slugs ofgreater or less thickness as demanded.
