Abstract
1297937 Valves for metallurgical ladles DIDIER-WERKE AG 17 Feb 1970 [22 Feb 1969] 9662/69 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4 A rotary valve for a bottom four metallurgical ladle comprises an upper stationary refractory plate member 5 and a lower rotary refractory member 6 with contacting flat surfaces 5<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>1</SP> in a plane normal to the rotary axis X in which flow passages 7 and 8 through said members are such that flows of metal are substantially symmetrical about said axis for any operative position of said members and the lower member 6 is associated with an axial discharge nozzle 10. Flow passages 7, Fig. 3 increase in width in one direction and are diametrically opposite one another. The passages 8 comprise radial recesses in the inner wall of member 6. In a modification (Fig. 5), the passages 7 comprise two series of three separate openings of different sizes corresponding to throttled and fully opened valve positions. Member 6 and discharge nozzle 10 are disposed in a cast iron frame 11 mounted on bevel wheels 12 and rotated by a lever, a steel cable 14, Fig. 1, or by a ratchet and gear wheel. In a modification (Fig. 2), the frame 11 is carried by three brackets (13) attached to the ladle bottom. Members 5, 6 and 10 may be made of an erosion resistant material containing more than 80% Al 2 O 3 . The nozzle 10 may be lengthened to extend below the surface of metal being teemed e.g. into a tundish. The use of the shorter version, Fig. 1 requires the provision of metal caps 16 filled with insulating material 17 over the stub axles 12a.
