The block 17 has a lower pear-shaped portion 18 which enters the empty can 10 so that as meat is forced into the ean, the latter is pushed downwardly until full a valve 102 allowing relief of fluid in the platform cylinder 49. When full a lug 99 on a platform guide shaft 46 triggers a valve 100 which redirects the air flow to the upper end of the platform cylinder 49 to cause the platform to be positively lowered to its initial position. During filling the can sides are supported by a backstop (66, Fig. 4) and a pair of cushioned jaws 61, 62 pivotally mounted on the block 17 and actuated by fluidic cylinders 67, 68. The block 17 contains a filler valve 22 comprising a slotted horizontal cylinder 23 which is appropriately rotated by a pivotable fluidic cylinder 33. To reduce meat adherence the block 17 may contain heating elements (37, Fig. 3) and have a smooth lower face that may be coated with P.T.F.E. The block 17 which may be of stainless steel has a detachable rear portion (20, Fig. 2) to permit access to the valve 22. The pressure vessel 13 may comprise a piston operated sausage stuffer.
