1296842 Shell moulds A DUNLOP 14 May 1970 [17 June 1969 30 July 1969] 30528/69 and 38179/69 Heading B5A A shell mould is produced by coating a pattern with a slurry containing a soluble silicate, coating it with dry refractory, applying a liquid gelling agent to gel the silicate, neutralizing or washing out excess gelling agent and repeating the above steps to a desired thickness. The slurry of the primary coating may be an alkaline silicate solution, the gelling agent including a phosphorus-containing compound, and the neutralizing or washing agent may be alkaline water, e.g. ammonia. Subsequent coating slurries may be acid solutions, e.g. of sodium or potassium silicate, or ethyl silicate, the neutralizing or washing agents being water and alcohol, respectively.
