Abstract

1296758 Honeycomb fastener METALLIC COMPONENTS (BEXLEY) Ltd 5 March 1970 10637/70 Heading F2H A bush for attaching an object to a honeycomb sandwich panel 20 comprises (a) a cylindrical member 1 having a body portion 4 and a head 5, (b) a support sleeve 3 of hollow cylindrical form, and (c) a third member 2 comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion 6 and a conical portion 13 between the body portion and a head 7. The third member 2 is an interference fit on body portion 4 of the first member and the sleeve 3 is an interference fit on the body portion 6 of the third member. The fastener is assembled as shown in Fig. 2D. A hole 24 is cut in the skin 22 of the honeycomb to receive the support sleeve 3 and a hole 25 is cut in skin 21 of the same diameter as the body portion 4 of the first member. The sleeve 3 is then inserted through hole 24 (Fig. 2B, not shown) and the third member 2 is placed with its body portion 6 within the bore of the sleeve 3. The skin 21 is supported and the third member is forced further within the sleeve 3 thus deforming it as shown. Finally the first member 1 is forced into the bore of the third member giving the assembled bush. The first member may be internally screw-threaded or it may be formed as a headed bolt. The third member may have a cylindrical portion of width equal to the thickness of the skin of honeycomb situated between the conical portion and the head. The components of the fastener may be formed from aluminium and may have nylon inserts or sealing washers or coatings if required for fluid tight fastenings.
