Organic peroxides and azo and diazo compounds such as di-t-butyl peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide and diisopropyl peroxycarbonate, reducible transition metal compounds, e.g. mangones, cobalt, iron, cesium, and rhenium, acid anhydride and/or monocarboxylic acids or esters are used as initiators. Examples describe the preparation of 2,2,9,9- tetramethyl sebacic acid by reacting 1,5-hexadiene with isobutyric acid in the presence of di-t-butyl peroxide, manganic isobutyrate and ceric oxide.
