Abstract

1296536 Branch fittings for pipes; stopping leaks B E NILSEN 22 Dec 1969 [26 Dec 1968] 62319/69 Headings F2G and F2P A resilient plastics fitting F providing for a lateral connection to a plastics pipe P or for stopping a leak from the pipe, comprises a semicylindrical saddle portion 25 with marginal portions 30 so biased that the fitting embraces in assembly the pipe circumference over an arc of more than 180 degrees, the portions 30 being turned inwardly in their free state to a progressively lesser diameter than the semicylindrical portion 25, and a groove 35 in the wall of the fitting surrounding a hole 20 in the pipe. As shown, the fitting includes a threaded socket for engaging a branch pipe (not shown). The hole 22 guides a drill 23 to cut a passage in the pipe P. The fitting F and the pipe P are joined together by the application of a joining fluid, e.g. an adhesive or a solvent for plastics, at their contact surfaces. The groove 35 receives the joining fluid by capillary action, to form a leakproof joint. More than one groove 35 may be provided. A second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a socket portion formed with the saddle portion to receive a branch tube as a spigot. A third embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes a flow guiding sleeve (15) projecting into the aperture (20) in the pipe P. A fourth embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), includes an internally threaded sleeve projecting into the pipe aperture, the sleeve being provided to receive a branch pipe. A modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), has its saddle portion solid, so as sealingly to cover a leak in the pipe P.
