Abstract

1296442 Episulphoxides, sulphinates and thiol-sulphinates SAGAMI CHEMICAL RESEARCH CENTER 6 Feb 1970 [6 Feb 1969 26 Feb 1969 (2)] 5686/70 Heading C2C A process for making episulphoxides (I) comprises oxidizing episulphides with an organic peracid and removing organic acid by-product from the reaction medium by precipitation with dry ammonia gas. Subsequent treatment of (I) with a nucleophilic reactant under condensation conditions affords corresponding thiolsulphinates (II) via sulphenic acids (the sulphenic acids are not isolated and undergo dimerization); reacting ethylene episulphoxide with an alcohol and a metal halide affords a beta-haloethane sulphinate (III). The following novel (I), (II) and (III) are described and exemplified: 3- chloropropylene e episulphoxide, beta-methoxyethanethiol - beta - methoxy - ethanesulphinote { MaO CH 2 CH 2 S (O)SCH 2 CH 2 OMe }, beta-math - oxy - beta - phenyl - ethanethiol - beta - methoxybeta - phenyl - ethane sulphinate, bis - (chloromethyl) - methanethiol - bis - (chloromethyl)- methane sulphinate and haloethane sulphinates of the formula XCH 2 CH 2 S(O)OR (X is Cl or Br and R is Me, Et or iso-Pr). Some of the products are useful as, e.g. microbiocides and antioxidants and as intermediates for, e.g. medicinal and agricultural chemicals.
