1296356 Depilatory I K R WEBSTER 10 Nov 1969 [12 Nov 1968] 53535/68 Heading A5B [Also in Division C4] An aqueous depilatory composition, which is packed in a container for aerosol application, contains (a) the equivalent of 2-10% by weight of thioglycollic acid, thiolactic acid or alpha-thioglycerol brought to a pH of 11.5-12.5 by the addition of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, (b) 3-30% by weight of a water-soluble anionic surfactant and (c) a volatile liquid propellant. The metal hydroxide employed in ingredient (a) may be calcium, lithium, sodium or potassium hydroxide or a mixture of lithium hydroxide with sodium or potassium hydroxide. The surfactant (b) may be an alkali metal, ammonium or amine alkyl sulphate or alkyl ether sulphate such as sodium, ammonium, monoethanolamine or triethanolamine lauryl sulphate or lauryl ether sulphate or mixed triethanolamine/ammonium lauryl sulphate. The propellant (c) may be a volatile liquid halogenated hydrocarbon or mixture, such as a mixture of difluorodichloromethane and tetrafluorodichloroethane. The composition may also contain a foam stabilizer such as a non-ionic alkylolamide or an alkali metal or triethanolamine soap of myristic acid. Thus 1-12% by weight of a non-ionic dialkylolamide such as coconut diethanolamide may be employed as foam stabilizer. Additional ingredients which may be present in the composition are oestrogenic substances, hydrazine, sulphate, magnesium stearate, lanolin, hexachlorophene, liquid paraffin, parahydroxybenzoic acid, cetyl alcohol, sodium silicate and perfume.
