Abstract

A shaving cream suitable for packaging under pressure in an aerosol dispenser comprises a detergent consisting of water-soluble fatty acid soaps of sodium, potassium and at least one nitrogen-containing base, the fatty acids from which these soaps are derived having 12-20 carbon atoms in the molecule, a liquefied normally gaseous low molecular weight halogenated hydrocarbon propellant, and an aqueous solvent medium in which the detergent is at least partly dissolved, the propellant and any undissolved detergent being dispersed in the solvent medium. The nitrogen-containing base may be ammonia or triethanolamine. The concentration of detergent in the cream is usually 5-15 and preferably 5-10 per cent. by weight. The ratio of the nitrogen-containing soap to the sum of the alkali metal soaps should preferably be within the range 1.2 : 1 to 2.5:1. The alkali metal soap component should contain at least 3.5 times as much potassium soap as sodium soap. The aqueous solvent medium may be plain water or water containing a small proportion of methanol, ethanol or normal or isopropanol and may constitute 70-90 and preferably about 80 per cent. by weight of the cream. The propellant may be mono-chloro-difluoro-methane or -ethane, dichloro-monofluoroethane, dichlorodifluoro- or trichloromonofluoro-methane, or dichloro-tetrafluoro- or difluoro-ethane or may be a mixture of two or more such compounds. The cream may contain 5-15, preferably 7-10, per cent. by weight of propellant. In an example about 3.5 parts by weight of triethanolamine stearate, about 1 . 1 parts of potassium stearate and about 0 . 3 parts of sodium stearate are dissolved at about 130 DEG F. in about 90 parts of deionized water, and the solution is cooled about 90 DEG F. and introduced into the pressure container of an aerosol dispenser. The contents are cooled to -5 DEG F. and about 5.5 parts of a cooled and liquefied propellant comprising about 60 per cent. dichloro-tetrafluoroethane and 40 per cent. dichloro-fluoromethane are added, and the container is sealed and shaken to disperse the propellant in the mixture. In other examples shaving creams are similarly prepared and packaged using soaps of palmitic acids, of palmitic and stearic acids and of stearic acid and coconut oil fatty acids respectively. In one example lauryl diethanolamide is added as a lather stabilizer, and in others lanolin and lecithin, glycerine, borax and sodium silicate, or isopropanol, glycerine and stearyl diethanolamide respectively are used as adjuvants. Those silicates, phosphates, nitrites, benzoates or borates known to act as corrosion inhibitors may be incorporated in the cream.
