Abstract
1296288 Automatic flow control LEYBOLDHERAEUS - VERWALTUNG GmbH 19 April 1971 [14 March 1970 26 Feb 1971] 23970/71 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions C7,H1] The rate of production of droplets of molten metal is measured by a counter comprising a light source 33, a detector 35 and an evaluating device 38. The latter compares the measured rate with a precribed reference rate and reports any differences to controllers 26 and 23 which then vary the power and/or direction of the appropriate electron beams playing on the surface of the molten metal in the container 10. This causes local changes in the viscosity of the pool 12 of molten metal and thus changes the rate of production of the droplets of metal. The container 10 may be provided with more than one dripping trough 17 and with an electron gun 25 which cyclically sweeps the zone of molten metal near each trough. In this case the controller 26 ensures that the relative residence times of the focused electron beam at each dripping trough 17 are such as to ensure a uniform dripping rate from each trough. The evaluating device 38 may integrate the pulses received from the detector 35 over a period of time
