Abstract

1296276 Irradiating polymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 8 May 1970 [20 Jan 1970] 22486/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] The solder-iron resistance of an ethylene/ chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer comprising from 40 to 60 mole per cent of ethylene and from 40 to 60 mole per cent of chlorotrifluoroethylene, based on the ethylene plus chlorotrifluoroethylene content of the copolymer is improved by subjecting the copolymer to ionizing radiation. In the Examples (i) the binary copolymer is irradiated on a wire, (ii) films of the copolymer and triallyl cyanurate are irradiated and (iii) chlorotrifluoroethylene, ethylene and alkyl heptafluoroisopropyl ether are copolymerized in the presence of 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2- trifluoroethane, chloroform and trichloroacetyl peroxide and the terpolymer irradiated.
