Abstract

1296123 Alkanesulphonic acid salts FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 4 March 1970 [4 March 1969] 10418/70 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of an alkali metal salt of an alkanesulphonic acid from the aqueous extracts obtainable from the reaction mixture obtained from the sulphoxidation of a paraffin hydrocarbon containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, comprises distilling the aqueous extracts until the main quantity of water is removed, removing from the distillation residue at least 65% by weight of the sulphuric acid originally present in the extracts by means of phase separation, neutralizing the alkanesulphonic acid solution obtained with alkali metal hydroxide and distilling the solution obtained in the presence of one or more oxyacids of phosphorus and/or one or more alkali metal salts of oxy-acids of phosphorus. The distillation residue may be further distilled to reduce the hydrocarbon content, preferably in the presence of steam. Hydrocarbons may be recycled to the sulphoxidation step. The reaction mixture may be bleached by H 2 O 2 or a substance yielding this after the removal of the sulphuric acid.
