Abstract

1296122 Abrasive articles NORTON CO 4 March 1970 [7 March 1969] 10350/70 Heading C4V An abrasive tool comprises abrasive particles surrounded by metallic material (defined as metals and metallic carbides), the metallic material being in physically distinguishable phases, the first being sintered powdered metallic material immediately surrounding uniformly distributed particles of abrasive and forming a coating about the particles, the second being a metallic bonding agent filling the volume not occupied by the abrasive and the coating of metallic material and bonding the coated particles. The bonding agent may be a different metallic material from the sintered metallic material. Specified metallic bonding meterials are bronze, brass or silver solder. Alternatively, the coating and bonding materials may be tungsten carbide-cobalt or iron-nickel-carben. The articles may be prepared by applying powdered metallic material to the abrasive grains, pressing the grains in a mould, filling the interstices between the grains with metallic bonding agent and applying heat and pressure to sinter the grains and unite the grains and bonding agent. A temporary binding agent may be present to adhere the powdered metallic material to the abrasive grains.
