Abstract

1296062 Variable pitch propellers DOWTY ROTOL Ltd 6 April 1970 [3 May 1969] 22681/69 Heading B7V [Also in Division Fl] A bladed rotor for an aerial or non-aerial propeller comprises, carried within the rotor hub, a pump operable by relative rotation with respect to fixed structure during rotor rotation, valve means for controlling the flow of pressure fluid from the pump to a fluid-pressure-operable actuator for adjusting the blading, and conduit means for conducting fluid to the pump inlet, the conduit means being connectible to a source external of fluid of the rotor. The invention is described as applied to the by-pass fan rotor 11 of a gas turbine engine 15, comprising a hub 13 carrying an actuator 32 for adjusting the fan blades 12, a control valve assembly 28 for controlling the actuator, and a pump 19 for supplying hydraulic fluid to the actuator. The pump 19 is of internally-meshing lobed type with its shaft 20 fixed to stationary structure so that it operates when the fan is driven. Lubricant from the engine lubricating system is supplied to the pump 19 for use as the hydraulic fluid, stationary supply and drain conduits 22, 30 being connected to supply and drain conduits 24, 29 rotating with the fan hub via a fluid transfer means 23. Contrary to what is shown in Fig. 1, the conduit 24 surrounds the conduit 29, both conduits being coaxial with the shaft 20. Fluid is transferred in the means 23 to and from the conduits 24, 29 through a stationary ported sleeve surrounding a ported sleeve secured to and rotating with the conduits. Instead of being of variable pitch, the blades 12 may be of variable twist or camber.
