Abstract
1295698 Drilling earth &c COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES 26 Nov 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 56341/70 Heading E1F Drill pipe racking system comprises a beam 16 pivoted at 40 on a derrick 17. The beam carries clamps 7A1, 7B1, 7C1, 7D1 which hold drill pipes so that they may be transferred between a horizontal storage position and a vertical operating position. The beam is associated with horizontal and vertical conveyors 47, 48 which carry drill pipes to and from the clamps on the beam. The beam is pivoted by an actuator 4 and is held in the vertical position by a latch (Fig. 8, not shown) which may be released by an actuator (10). The derrick 17 also has clamps 9A1, 9B1, 9C1 on handling arms 8A1, 8B1, 8C1 respectively, and a block 23 which is movable laterally on a track 24 to allow the beam to pivot over the drill axis. The beam is so arranged that when vertical, the drill pipe is offset from the drill axis, and the handling arms are then extended to align them. The block is moved along the track 24 by an actuator (2, Fig. 5 not shown). The track is' mounted on a vertically movable frame 30. Actuators are also provided to operate the clamps, to move the handling arms, and to open and close the elevator collar 18. A control system is described (Figs. 12-19, not shown) by which the system may be operated automatically, using limit switches at the ends of the ranges of movement of the actuators to initiate and control further operation.
