In a rest position the forward end of the arms extend into the path of travel of the card beyond the stops. Arm 15 is mounted on shaft 37 and has a portion 35 at one end which may act as a counterbalance and which contains slots 45, 49 of differing length. A stop 71 is received in the slots and in the rest position the stop is in slot 49 abutting shoulder 41. Arm 15<SP>1</SP> is pivoted about shaft 37 and has a similar portion 35<SP>1</SP> containing the slots in a reverse order. In the rest position a stop 71<SP>1</SP> is received in the longer slot 45<SP>1</SP>. A card moving on the table is correctly coded or positioned if the notches or chamfers are aligned with arm or arms 15<SP>1</SP> and if there is an absence of notches or chamfers in the parts aligned with arm or arms 15. As the card is moved arm or arms 15 pivot about shaft 37 until the long slot is aligned with stop 71 as the card hits stops 17, 19. When the card is stationary key 65 is operated either manually or by a microswitch at stops 17, 19. The key pivots about axis 63 to raise an end of arms 57 and 53. Arm 57 pivots about shaft 59 and carries shaft 37 which is lowered only if the long slots of arms 15, 151 are aligned with the stops 71, 71<SP>1</SP>. Arm 53 pivots about shaft 55 to lower stops 17, 19. Key 65 operates switch 67 to operate a drive roller 77 for the card. The card may alternatively be fed manually. If the notches are incorrectly situated either arm 15<SP>1</SP> is moved or arm 15 is not moved or both and in at least one case the short slot is aligned with stop 71, 71<SP>1</SP> preventing movement of arm 57, arm 53 and the key 65. The card may have further notches aligned with further arms 15.
